22, after ahead overcoming alcoholism, depression, and breast cancer. British actress Jean Merilyn Simmons lost her battle with lung blight on Friday, Jan. The award-winning Hollywood beauty passed away at home in Santa Monica, California, concluding a 66-year acting career that began with her role in Give Us the Moon at age 14.
This role won Simmons an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress and established the alone 19-year-old as an internationally acclaimed actress. Simmons quickly rose to prominence, starring in Great Expectations (1946) and Black Narcissus (1947) before actuality cast as Ophelia in Laurence Oliviers Hamlet (1948). The youngest of four children, Simmons grew up in Lower Holloway, London, where she was discovered by director Val Guest at the Aida Foster School of Dance.
